The Fallas at Denia - March 2008
By Mike Hardy
15th March 2008 - 19th March 2008
For 4 days, from 15th to 19th March each year, 12 local districts in Denia on the Spanish Costa Blanca compete with each other to display the most spectacular set piece models which they have spent the previous 12 months building. The localities have a committee which decides on the content of the model and then a team of builders put it together it over the year. The models are erected at a key spot in each locality - often completely blocking the roads. Over the four days the judging takes place and there are all sorts of parades and much imbibing of alcohol! In each locality, the local children also build a smaller (and different) model.
The models are built mainly from wood, polystyrene, card and paper and other inflammable materials because..............
...the night of 19th is called The Night of Burning. Why? Because starting with the childrens set pieces, all the displays are set on fire!!
The childrens models are burnt from 10.00 pm. The adults models are burned from midnight starting with the model by the Town Hall and then going in reverse order of placing from 12th down to the 1st Prize which is fired at about 4.00am.
It is a most spectacular event (also taking place in Valencia) abd bear in mind that the biggest models are as much as 15 metres high and are right in the middle of residential areas. The Fire Brigade (Bomberos) are in attendance at each burning and their job is to try and make sure that houses, blocks of flats and trees survive the fierce heat of the burning.
The photos show some of the spectacular models in daylight and at night. The videos show some of the actual burning.
This is a really fantastic spectacle and terrific fun to take part in.
