Steve's Anniversary speech to Viki in Crete
By Mike Hardy
2nd September 2007
Steve's Mum, three aunts and step uncle, Norman, Viv, Norma & Mike went for a superb meal at The Mediterranean Restaurant, overlooking the harbour at Agios Nikolaos. We ate on the second floor, outside! This is due to the very steep hillside on which the restaurant is built. It was used as the German Cretan HQ during the Second World War ande there is a "smugglers" tunnel which runs for some 200m metres from the dining garden down to the sea level. It was used as a bomb shelter in the War and then by the current owners as a wine cellar for a time. They kindly allowed us to go down the first 5om or so - the tunnel is now sealed after this point and I have added the photos to show it.
At the end of Steve's very romantic speech to Viki he very generously paid the entire bill for all the assembled company which must have made his eyes water a bit!
A wonderful night, finished off with a nightcap (or possibly two!) on the way back home.
